Big question iii · Macro (long run)

Why do some economies grow rich while others stay poor?

Over two centuries, sustained growth turned a world where most people were poor into one where many are not. Why it started where it did, and why some countries still haven't joined, is the biggest question in economics.

Emerged 1776

The Wealth of Nations asked why some nations prosper and named the growing division of labour as the main cause.

In the real world

North and South Korea were one country until 1945: same people, same history, same geography. Their living standards are now worlds apart.

The founders. Adam Smith and David Ricardo asked why some nations get rich. Their answer: specialise, trade, and let prices coordinate. Almost every later school either builds on them or argues with them. Comparative advantage, their best idea, still opens every trade course.

    Institutional

The rules of the game matter as much as the players. Property rights, courts, norms and organisations explain why some countries prosper and why firms exist at all. Once a critique of mainstream economics, it now wins Nobels, most recently in 2024.

    Ecological

The economy sits inside nature, not the other way round. Endless growth on a finite planet is impossible, so wellbeing within limits should replace GDP as the goal. The big argument: can technology decouple growth from emissions fast enough?

    Complexity

The economy as an evolving ecosystem rather than a machine in balance. Small accidents get locked in, networks matter, and innovation keeps destroying and recreating industries. Brilliant at explaining tech platforms; hard to test and weak at forecasting.
