Is economics teaching too narrow?
The argument behind this whole atlas.
Side A
Yes, teach many schools
Students learn one framework as if it were the only one, then can't explain crises like 2008.
Evidence
Students walked out of Greg Mankiw's Harvard introductory course in 2011. The Rethinking Economics movement grew after 2008 and pushed for pluralist curricula.
Side B
No, economics is already more diverse than it looks
The real diversity is across fields and methods, and evidence settles arguments better than schools do.
Evidence
The empirical turn (Nobels in 2019 and 2021) shows a discipline that tests its ideas. The free CORE textbook was redesigned after 2008 to start from real-world problems.
What to watch
How economics curricula handle it. Some programs now explicitly combine economic theory with other disciplines.
